Fascinating Friday – Scale of the Universe

Alright you guys, I have now dubbed Fridays “Fascinating Friday”. Which means, each Friday I will make a post about something that is utterly fascinating!

Today’s fascinating feature …. THE SCALE OF THE UNIVERSE!Scale-of-the-Universe-2012-14

I have always been fascinated by space. Most anyone who walks outside on a dark night can’t help but gaze at the stars for at least a moment. We are drawn to look at them, and wonder what they are. They inspire us to dream, to think, boggle our minds, and encourage us to remember that there is more to life than our daily routines we find ourselves circling day to day.

When it comes to our universe, there is so much we do not know. And yet, we are living in a day and age were space exploration and science are making discoveries faster than ever!

One important thing I view has a great impact on our interpretation of life, is coming to understand the true scale of our universe, and how we stack up in comparison!

My first real exposure to the scale of the universe was through this site. It is an animated view of THE SCALE OF THE UNIVERSE! We start with humans, and our world we relate to. Then, as the animation plays out, we really come to see juuuuust how minuscule we are. It may hit you hard, if it is something you’ve never thought about before. But I don’t take it as something that diminishes our value as humans. I find it stimulating, and hopeful!

Here is the link below:

To operate the animation, hover your cursor over the box and then scroll with your mouse to zoom in and out. Zooming out will take you to the largest objects, and zooming in will toggle through the smaller objects.

Now, how do you feel? Did you experience different emotions throughout the animation?

Please leave your thoughts about the animation in the comments, I’d love to know how your experience learning about the scale of the universe went!

When life gets bitter, take an ADVENTURE!

I have found that in the times that life begins to go sour, taking a break from things and getting into an adventure usually levels the playing field!

Adventure is life’s chaser! Just like I always chase my tequila with lime, I try to chase life’s bitter moments with adventure.

Doing so helps put life in perspective, at least for me. It makes me think of the Bob Marley song, “Three Little Birds”.

“Rise up this mornin’
Smiled with the risin’ sun
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin’ sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true
Saying’, (this is my message to you)
Singing’ don’t worry ’bout a thing
‘Cause every little thing gonna be alright
Singing’ don’t worry (don’t worry) ’bout a thing
‘Cause every little thing gonna be alright”
Don’t let life get you down to the point that you can’t enjoy the beauty in it as well, and sometimes it takes an adventure to expose you to that beauty!

Yamaha YZF-R3 – Review

Good day to you all!

Today I’d like to take some time to talk about the Yamaha YZF-R3, which is the motorcycle I own. I have had it for over a year now, and I think it is finally time to write a REVIEW!

The Yamaha R3 is a very lightweight bike with quite a bit of power for 300cc!

For my body size, I love the Yamaha R3! It is nimble, and handles wonderfully. The only modification I have done is replace the stock exhaust with a Akrapovic slip-on. The slip-on is a little more light-weight, smaller in size, and makes my exhaust just a little more loud, and throaty.

Top speed (without pushing the red-line too far) is average around 105 mph. On a good road, coming down a hill with little wind resistance, I have had her running at 110 mph.

With a lightweight motorcycle, it is a bit more difficult to ride in heavy winds, as there is less resistance against the push of the wind. But I have ridden in wind speeds around 25-30 mph and survived! The R3 handles pretty well aside from the fact that you don’t have the weight of a heavier bike working in your favor.

The only downside so far has been that Yamaha has now placed two recalls on the 2015 year model R3 (which is what I own.) The first recall was related to the clutch, and then the second is related to the gas tank mounting bracket. But, on the bright side, Yamaha has replaced these parts plus the work to do it, free of charge!

In terms of cost, the Yamaha R3 is a bit more expensive than other motorcycles competing in its CC Class. However, I think you see this extra cost put into the bike with the extra features that it has. One example is the gear indicator! This feature is one of my favorites. The seating is also very comfortable compared to some other bikes I have sat on (Ninja 300, CBR 250.) Something to think about is that this bike does not have ABS. I was a bit worried (even though ABS on motorcycles is a fairly new feature), but honestly I have not had any issues without the ABS, and there have absolutely been times where it could have been beneficial.

Overall, an aggressive motorcycle for its size that handles great on city streets and highways!

Napier Truck Tent – Review

Purchasing this truck tent has been a great decision for multiple reasons. Let’s explore these reasons below!

  1. Gets your tent up off the ground

This has been the greatest benefit. Being off the ground helps with keeping insects and critters out of your tent, as well as limits dirt/debris tracked in. No tarp needed to go under the tent like when it’s placed on the ground to protect it from sticks and other debris that could damage your tent.

2. Allows movement of tent even after it has been setup

Once you’ve set the tent up, guess what? It is on a move-able platform, aka the truck! If the spot where you are parked gets sunny, you can simply move your truck into the shade, which of course, also moves your tent! Through experience, anything above 20-30 mph you should probably lower the tent into the bed and weigh it down before driving.

3. Easy to setup

The tent comes with directions, and I suggest following these directions the first time or two as the setup for this tent is different than ground tents. After this, you will have them memorized, and should have no problem setting up the tent in 10-15 minutes.

4. Easy to take down

To take down the tent, just reverse order the instructions to put it up. It folds down into the bed really well, making it easy to roll up while still in the truck bed. We always roll the bag with the tent poles inside the tent so that we know how long to make it so that it fits back into the carrying bag easily. We get it to fit back into the carrying bag, plus the original box every time we tear it down.

Just a couple of other comments:

We use a full size air mattress in ours which fits perfectly between the wheel wells. Also, we have not been stuck in the rain yet, so I can’t attest to its protection against rain, but the rain fly seems to be durable. We have been in some pretty high winds, and have driven it down the road at 20-30 mph, and it holds up pretty well in the wind.

Overall, a great tent that is user-friendly, and makes camping more flexible and enjoyable!

Adventures at Beaver’s Bend

This was our first trip to Beaver’s Bend, and we were not let down! The beauty here in eastern Oklahoma amidst the beginnings of the Ouachita Mountains, and the mountain river that flows through has awe-inspiring energy. Despite the heavy tourist traffic that comes with such a famously-beautiful park (which tends to be a damper on our level of enjoyment as we prefer to be away in the wilderness from any other human beings), we were able to look past the noise and influx of people and enjoy our surroundings (how could we not in such a beautiful place.)

Beaver’s bend offers multiple opportunities to break away from your campsite, and get out into nature. For instance, we had our first exposure to kayaking while in Beaver’s Bend. There are rentals available for kayaks and canoes, and they will shuttle you to a drop point on the river that floats you all the way back to the rental beach (which takes approx. 1-2 hours depending on your efforts given to paddling.) Needless to say, we had a RIVER OF FUN on the kayaks!

It is worth noting that while at Beaver’s Bend we had ZERO cell service! I don’t spend a great amount of time on my phone while out adventuring, but when you have zero cell service you come to realize just how much time that small amount of cellphone usage was killing. It is easy to see how our predecessors accomplished so much when they didn’t have cellphones to aimlessly pre-occupy their idle minds. Cellphones disappear and I guarantee wood whittling makes a come back for most popular hobby!

The most memorable moment of this trip happened the first night out at our campsite.

It was just after the sun had set, with a faint light still illuminating enough to see around you. Sitting at the site, watching the river flow as the blue herons fly over we see a glimpse of what looked similar to a heron, but in the second we saw the figure emerge from the trees we felt something just wasn’t right about this one.

We continued to watch across the horizon, wondering if what we had seen was in fact a heron or something different, when we saw it fly across the sky and into the trees by the river bank. This time we knew exactly why this heron was different. It was no heron, but a Bald Eagle. Bright white feathers covering his head and tail, and his head sharp and majestically shaped like an eagle!

A picture might be worth a thousand words, but seeing something in real-life right in front of your eyes and enjoying the moment is price-less!

Ingredients for a Flavorful Life

Surely his artwork is a testimony to the depths of his dreams?

It’s important to think about the subtleties in life that inspire us to dream; to create. Life becomes bland without creative thoughts that spark ingenuity. Life makes it easy to fall into patterns, and stay in our comfort zones. It is in these moments I find myself at my lowest. And sure enough, a trip out into the wilderness is all it takes to add a little salt to my life.

Expose yourself to ALL of life’s ingredients! Throw some thrill and adrenaline in life’s pie. Add some water and wildlife for ultimate flavor. Who wants to eat basic, boring pie? Flavorless and dry.

Life is abundantly complex. Yet, when you find yourself sitting on the bank of a river gazing at the stars, it all falls into perspective and seems so simple.

Don’t worry about the things you have no control over, and enjoy the things that give your life a boost of adrenaline and a punch of flavor!

Adventurously yours,
